Galloway 5th Grade, Atlanta, GA

golfCourseSplash2-1080x420

Our Galloway fifth graders are participating in the GRA for the third year. We are an independent school located in beautiful Chastain Park in Atlanta, GA. Our 41 fifth graders are middle schoolers, unlike many of our local schools, so they come to me only for Language Arts, and they enjoy feeling a little more grown up and independent! The Galloway culture is strong on reading and many of our students participate in Book Clubs and Reading Bowls after school. Our library is an unusually energetic and inviting place that grows readers.

Last year, we loved figuring out where our partner schools were using Mystery Skype and yes or no questions. We are reading Fish in a Tree, by Lynda Mullaly Hunt this year. We are willing to Skype, use Edmodo, try Edublog….or share Google Docs. Notice and Note (Kylene Beers and Bob Probst) close reading strategies were immensely helpful last year and we will be looking for signposts as we read. We look forward to making connections with you!

Year 5 at St Andrew’s, Manchester UK

We are a year 5 class located in Salford, Manchester – where the rain never stops!  Although our town centre is very small, there are lots of wonderful things to do and visit around us. Up the road we have Salford Quays, where many TV shows (including Coronation Street) are now filmed. A lot of us also enjoy spending our weekends at the Trafford Centre or watching our favourite football teams (Manchester United or City) play.

This is our first time participating in Global Read Aloud and we’re really excited to connect with schools from all over the world reading The Year of Billy Miller.

Level 5 and 6 at Antoni Gaudi School, Barcelona, Spain

About Us

We are two 5th and two 6th grade classes of English language learners. Our school is located in Santa Margarida de Montbui in the northern area of Barcelona, approximately 60 Km from the big city.

Barcelona is Catalonia’s capital and it’s a city brimming with art, culture and traditions. You can find many works designed by Antoni Gaudi in Barcelona, such as the Sagrada Familia or Park Güell, being the most representative of his legacy.

However, if you step off the beaten track and venture out of the city, you will find Montserrat, a mountain which is an exponent of surreal art that we can see just by looking out our window, or La Tossa de Montbui, a Romanesque church that stands alongside the ruins of an ancient castle.

Our gastronomy is also worth mentioning as it brings together a delicious variety of typical Catalan flavours sourced from the nearby countryside, mountains and sea. Human castles, the “sardana” dance, the “running fire” or “Patufet” are some of our most popular traditions.

This is our first time participating in GRA. and we are extremely delighted to be working with classrooms from around the world.  We are looking forward to developing our relationships across the globe and learning a lot.
